Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government-backed small savings scheme launched under the “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” initiative. It is specifically designed to help parents build a dedicated financial corpus for their girl child’s higher education and marriage expenses. The scheme currently offers an attractive interest rate of 8.2% per annum, which is compounded annually, making it one of the highest-yielding government savings instruments.

Core Eligibility Criteria

  • Gender: The account can only be opened in the name of a girl child who is a resident Indian citizen.
  • Age Limit: The girl child must be under 10 years of age at the time of account opening.
  • Account Limits: Only one account is permitted per girl child.
  • Family Ceiling: A family can open a maximum of two accounts for two daughters. An exception is allowed for triplets or twins born in the second birth order, allowing a third account.

Investment & Deposit Rules

  • Minimum Deposit: A minimum of ₹250 must be deposited every financial year to keep the account active.
  • Maximum Deposit: The maximum annual investment limit is ₹1.5 Lakh per financial year.
  • Deposit Tenure: Parents or legal guardians only need to make active deposits for the first 15 yearsfrom the account opening date.
  • Default Penalty: If the minimum ₹250 is not deposited in a year, the account defaults and can be reactivated by paying a fine of ₹50 per missed year.

Maturity & Withdrawal Conditions

  • Total Maturity Period: The account officially matures 21 years from its date of opening.
  • Partial Withdrawal: Up to 50% of the accumulated balance can be withdrawn for higher education expenses once the girl child reaches 18 years of age or completes the 10th standard.
  • Premature Closure: The account can be closed early if the girl gets married after turning 18. It is also permitted under extreme compassionate grounds like a medical emergency or the sudden demise of the guardian.

Tax Benefits (EEE Status)

The scheme enjoys the highly coveted Exempt-Exempt-Exempt (EEE) tax status under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act:

  • Exempt Contributions: Deposits up to ₹1.5 Lakh per year are eligible for deduction.
  • Exempt Returns: The interest accrued annually is entirely tax-free.
  • Exempt Maturity: The final corpus withdrawn upon maturity attracts zero tax.
